Steve was a real Racers Friend. Steve got his 1st anouncing job at one of the Smokers monthly meet. Steves folks ran the Smokers concession at the track. Bernie Mather was the Smokers announcer, Bernie noticing Steves deep voice asked Steve to take the mic. The rest is history.
He and Bill Doner ran the big west coast tracks.

he was the voice of drag racing for so many of us. he always help those listening/watching understand what was going. I sure he brought many of us to the sport and to begin racing our own cars.

Without question Steve was one of the greatest EVER! Thing I appreciated about Steve was that he was personally experienced in every facet of the sport - first hand. HE DID THE WORK! And then he took those tools to TV and created a whole new career based on HOW GOOD HE WAS. No end-of-track guy operating today is close to what Steve Evans achieved. I miss him.

Steve was the guy who gave me my first announcing job, at Irwindale Motocross. As far as I'm concerned, and with all due respect to the other great announcers out there, Steve was THE BEST DAMN DRAG RACING ANNOUNCER there ever was - especially in a color role. I'll come back with some stories as time permits, but I sure miss him. I had dinner last Sunday night with his ex-wife Lesely and had a fun time remembering!
