Dateline 1968: It was a big meet at Kahoka. The pits were full and the bleachers were full. Every driver had visions of putting their opponent on the trailer and adding another trophy to their collection. I cleared tech for “B” stock and was ready to race. Some of the heavy iron ran first. then “A” stock would be called up, except this time I heard “A” stock called and then I heard “Rampage” to the starting line now”. I turned to Roy Long who was with us and said “did he call me up” Roy said “yes he did” I said “what the “H is going on. Again I heard “Rampage to the starting line NOW” I jumped in car headed for the starting line. When I got there a starter was waving me into the burn out area. In the other lane was a Hemi Road Runner I had seen race here every time I came to Kahoka. I thinking no way I’m not running that. I rolled the window to protest, the starter was at my window. H said “He, pointing to the Road Runner, is the only one in his class; we are not going to give him $100 for a lone run. Your running him. You will get a handicap” and he turned and started backing up the track pointing at me to follow. I cleaned the tires off and followed. Just guessing, but, I think I got about a 3 car handicap. Staged, the light went green; I left pulling gears like I was chasing something that left last week. Just as my win light come the Road Runner blew past me….but just a finder too late. Needless to say I was in shock and $100 to the good.  When I pulled into the pits everyone was jumping up and down shouting. I walked up to the stand to pick up my prize, I could see the Hemi owner standing there. I thought Oh, this don’t look good. He was doing a lot of talking. When I got there I heard him say “I have never seen a 383 run like that “. I Picked up my money and returned to the car. Never forget this as long as I live. Great night at Kahoka, one of the best tracks going.
